JUDGING OF BEARDS

Carnival Climax At Queenstown (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL Nov. 19. The quality, quantity and styles of beards grown since August 1 was judged in Queenstown tonight. There was a large crowd of clean-shaven male visitors present to witness the big shave-off of about 140 beards. This colossal all-male party marked the end of 10 riotous days of celebrations for the Queenstown centennial. When 150 men gathered on the evening of July 31 to purchase their “paidon-my-scruffy-appearance" badges, there were many who were tolerantly amused, and others very sceptical to the staying ability of th? entrants. Since then the scheme has proved many thing—mainly, that there are a large number of loyal and tolerant wives about. Results were: champion: F. Haworth; longest beard, E. Cavanagh; tinted beard. N. Schiieb; best “garden” growth. R. Robirason; most luxuriant growth in left ear, F. Reid; most homely beard, G. Milne.

The longest beard was 31 inches. A guessing competition was held to guess the weight of Mr G. Hansen’s beard. This was Six pennyweights.
