SPECTATORS AT FIRE PRACTICE
Red Deer Stags Unimpressed Several schoolchildren and a few adults were not the only interested spectators last night when the Otira RailaFire Brigade was praetor the forthcoming Dominion competitions. Two red deer stags stood on a mountainside clearing, not 200 yards away, and gazed at the scene.
Trains were working and 1 the firemen were shouting their orders, but the com- i motion did not appear to i worry the -deer at all They > were quite unimpressed by i the whole affair and, after , pausing for a few minutes, sauntered off into the neighbouring bush. They were only two of a . large number of deer that ! have been seen from the side of the road in the last fortnight. Some early morning travellers have had to slow down as deer crossed the road in front of their vehicles. Several deer have also the unborn young, have been taken.
