IMPORTS TO AUST.

Licensing Removed (N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) CANBERRA, October 17. Australia tomorrow will remove the remnants of its import licensing system, most of which was abandoned in February, 1960. The Trade Minister (Mr John McEwen) announced today in the House of Representatives that the only goods remaining subject to import licensing would be those on which quantitative restrictions bad been imposed for protective purposes pending a report by the Tariff Board on long-term needs. Mr McEwen said these restrictions covered all ingots and alloys, certain ball bearings, certain timbers, penicillin and streptomycin. In addition, imports of certain classes of second-hand earth-moving equipment and construction machinery would be restricted. Mr McEwen was introducing new legislation empowering the Tariff Board to recommend quantitative restrictions. He said he expected the need to use quantitative restrictions would arise on very few occasions. The right to use these restrictions in particular circumstances was the right no country had forgone.
