HIGH-ALTITUDE U.S. TEST
Recordings Made
At Scott Base
The high-altitude American nuclear test over Johnston Island on July 9 is traceable on recordings made at Scott Base, said the superintendents of the Magnetic Observatory (Mr A L. Cull-
ington). The records had just reached him with the first mail from the Antarctic for this season, he said. Both earth-current and magneticfield instruments recorded the disturbance. The effect was small but unmistakable
“Their records are very interesting indeed, because although Scott Base is about on the same true meridian as Johnston Island, it is 30 degrees off the magnetic meridian, ard is a whole quadrant (90 degrees of latitude) away,” he said. The records from Cape Hallett would not be available for about another month, when the first mail was expected from there.
