HALSWELL WATER

Poll On Loan Proposal A poll will be held in December on the Halswell County Council's proposal to raise a £62,000 loan for a high-pressure water supply. The council, at a special meeting. confirmed a resolution that the loan be raised. but r at the usual monthly meeting afterwards it received a petition from 134 ratepayers asking that a poll be held on whether the loan should be raised.

The County Clerk (Mrs R. Ballintine) said there were about 750 residents in the area concerned.

A pffll must be held if it is sought by 5 per cent of the ratepayers concerned. The chairman (Mr H. Cox) said that the residents who had signed the petition had heard only one side of the story. “They were told their rates would increase by £5O. Some believed it, some did not.” he said.

There would be a difference of only £2 in the water rates for the repaying of the loan, said the county engineer (Mr M. J. Clark). The scheme would give better service and reduce the fire risk. The council decided to recommend to the incoming council that, before the poll is held, a public meeting of Halswell residents be called and the loan proposal explained.
