P.O. Savings Up On Last Year’s

WELLINGTON. October 12. Savings were boosted throughout the country as a result of last week's savings campaign, according to a Post Office spokesman. Deposits in Post Office savings bank accounts, at more than £5 million, were more than £1 million up on the figure for the same week last year. Deposits this year exceeded withdrawals by £424,425, compared with an excess of withdrawals over deposits last year. Deposits for the same week in previous years were: 1961. £3,700,000; 1960. £3.800,00; 1959. £3.400,000. The excess of deposits over withdrawals for the same week in previous years were: 1960, £393.693; 1959, £257,806 Last year withdrawals exceeded deposits by £130.986 The figures are considered to be a barometer only. They take no account of additional deposits in other types of Post Office savings accounts or additional savings in trustee savings banks.
