Negro Gaining Acceptance

IN Z Press Assn.—Copyright) OXFORD (Mississippi), Octi 11. The negro student, Mr Janies H. Meredith, strolled through the University of Mississippi campus without an escort at his side for the first time today.

A single loud unfavourable remark was heard as groups of students walked closer to the 29-year-old Meredith than his small guard of Federal marshals, bringing up the rear.

The -cene was in sharp contrast to the jeers about 100 students mostly male*— hurled at him as he left the cafeteria last night the Associated Press reported. Mr Meredith's first appearance on the campus of the previously all-white univer-

sity on September 30 resulted in riots which left two dead. In New Orleans, the fifth United States Circuit Court of Appeals will convene tomorrow to give Mississippi's Governor (Mr Ross Barnett) and the Lieutenant-Governor (Mr Paul Johnson, jun.) an other chance to show they are no longer in contempt. The Court accepting a Justice Department sugees'ion decided on October 2 that the two must show further that they were now complying with its orders that forced Mr Meredith’s admission to the university on October 1 There were ind'?ations that the Governor would not attend the Court hearing United Press International reported.

Reports from outside Mississippi told of acts of violence or threats against negroes. In Chicago, a Molotov cocktail (petrol bomb) was flung into the fiat a negro family

had moved into this week, police said. Firemen quickly put out the flames and there was only minor damage The family’s three children, the oldest 14. were alone in the flat at the time. No-one was injured. Also in Chicago, a negro couple withdrew their flve-vear-oli son from a parochial school because of threatening letters, taunting telephone calls and jeering hecklers.

In Sacramento. California, the home and car of a negro family, which moved yesterday into a previously allwhite area, were found smeared today with crudely nainted slogans warning them to leave. “Get out or we will burn you.” was one. In Mount Morris. Michigan. last night a crowd of about 125 persons, mostly teen-agers, staged a demonstration in front of the home of a negro teacher who moved into the all-white

suburb five days ago.
