“The Press” Special Service

AUCKLAND, Oct 1. Brigadier Sir Bernard FerKn, Governor-General sate of New Zealand, who will arrive to take up his duties in November, has been obliged to strike one fish from his fishing record. This follows the divulgence of a 37-year-old secret kept by Mr E. Cutler, of Mount Albert Mr Cutler was chief cook in the Government steamship Tutanekai when it was used to 1925 by Sir Bernard Fergusson’s father Sir Charles Fergusson, then Governor-General.

“Sir Bernard Fergusson was 14 and not blessed With much luck at fishing," said Mr Cutler yesterday. “He was fishing from the deck of the ship somewhere in the islands and not getting anything, so I decided to help him out “I sent a cook below to the freezer for a fish. I leaned over the side and hooked it on to his line. Sir Bernard Fergusson was highly delighted.’’

Mr Cutler wrote to Sir Bernard Fergusson informing him of the incident. In his reply, Sir Bernard Fergusson says he well remembers the trip, but he disagrees over the location. He claims it was

.to the Marlborough Sounds at Christmas 1925. In his letter. Sir Bernard Fergusson gives further evidence of a remarkable memory. He writes: “I cannot remember all the names, but Mr Webling was chief officer, and Robinson the wireless officer. Among the crew were Williams and a Maori. Henare Parata.

“I can put a face but no name to the bosun and the steward. What fun it all was."

Sir Bernard Fergusson says he will call on Mr Cutler when he arrives to Auckland.

One of Mr Cutler’s proud possessions is a recipe for ginger pudding given him by Sir Bernard Fergusson’s mother. Lady Alice Fergusson.
