AVOIDING TAX
British Buy Vans
(Special Crspdt. NXP.A.) LONDON. Octooer 1
More and more people in Britain are “driving through a loophole” that lets them buy a van for private use free of purchase tax, says the “Daily Express.” One of London's biggest car distributors. it adds, estimated half toe vans he sells are for private use. The saving a motorist makes this way is a big one. He buys for instance a minivan costing £360 instead pf the cheapest mini-car priced at £496. including tax, or be buys the next size van at £368, Instead of paying £Bll for a similar model car. The cheapest private .car to be bought in Britain costs £487, but a motorist can get the same type van for £379. The driver who saves his money this way is, of course, penalised. He cannot have side windows in the rear apartment or he must pay purchase tax. But if he holds on to his van for four years he can have extra windows put in without penalty.
