LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS
Labour Opening Tomorrow
The Labour Party's campaign for the Christchurch local body elections will be opened in the Hastings Street Hall. Sydenham, tomorrow evening, one week after the opening of toe campaign by the Citizens’ Association, which has held the majority on all local bodies for the last three years
His party did not intend to issue special invitations to individuals or organisations to attend meetings, but would advertise its meetings as open to everyone interested in the welfare of the city, said Mr J. Palmer, secretary of the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee, yesterday. Full opportunity would be taken of meeting people at halls, on street corners and lunch-hour meetings in factories.
The party's policy would be announced at toe meeting. Mr Palmer said, and would be aimed at progress for the city and protection for its ratepayers and residents He suggested that Citizens* Association candidates would have to explain torir actions “in disposing of valuable city assets” and might perhaps take the public into their confidence “by informing them straight out of any further proposals they may have for the people's assets.” The Labour Party would be speaking with a united voice, Mr Palmer said, after commenting that it appeared there was some division in the ranks of the Citizens’ Association, as two candidates had announced that they would promote policies of their own.
