NEED FOR FRIGATES

46 Six Minimum For N.Z.” (N Z Press Association) TAURANGA. Sept. 28. The need for adequate antisubmarine defence for New Zealand. comprising both modern frigates and aircraft, was stressed bv the Chief of the Naval Staff (Rear-Ad-miral P Phinps) to the Dominion conference of the Navy League at Mount Mannganui today. Admiral Phipps said it was known that Russia had a fleet of at least 300 submarines which were being kept up to date all the time. The Western allies between them could not muster this number of anti-submarine vessels. “Much has been said about the role of aircraft in carrying men and freight, but they are only efficient over short distances." said Admiral Phinps. “Assuming that New Zealand should just do for herself what has to be done in wartime —at least getting shins across the Tasman, she will need a minimum of six modem frigates.”
