NEW STYLES
The clothes the Queen’s dressmaker, Hardy Amies, designs for the British man to wear this northern winter are very likely what we. will be choosing when our winter comes again.
Suits feature a longer jacket with a more shaped waist and ’ narrower trousers. Overcoats are wide and loose fitting, to emphasise the close fit of the basic suit. Knee-length and with a full-drape, many of them feature the new Ghillie collar, which can be buttoned at the neck against the weather. Raincoats in the collection are mostly foambacked and the designs are based on wide-cut overcoat styles. Making a welcome return, and in contrast to the loose-fitting overcoats,
are closely fitted doublebreasted coats with a shaped waist, very broad lapels and a half belt. Textures tend to be rough, especially for overcoats, and much use is made of knobbly Scottish boucles and Irish tweeds. Black lamb collars and revers appear on some overcoats. Evening jackets in blue barathea, faced with blue satin, have matching satin waistcoats and satin stripes to the trousers. With these are worn blue barathea overcoats which have a shaped waist, belted back and black lamb collars.
