Indoor Sports To Raise Funds
About 250 persons saw an international indoor soccer tournament and two indoor basketball games, arranged at Cowles Stadium by the Canterbury Amateur Sports Federation to raise money to assist Canterbury category B nominees for the Empire Games in Perth in November. The nominees are N. K. Boon (bowls), Miss S. Nicholson (swimming), and I. B. Roberts (wrestling). Money will also be raised by a house-to-house collection on September 29 and October 6. In soccer tournament teams of players bom in New Zealand. Scotland, England and on the Continent played four very fast games. In the final Scotland beat New Zealand by 1 goals to 1. P. McFarland, for Scotland opened the scoring after three minutes in the first eight-minute half. McParland scored again twice during the first half and D. Torkington scored once. New Zealand’s point was gained by R. Bruce six minutes after play started. The half-time score was 4-1 to Scotland. During the second spell McParland kicked two goals and Torkungton one. The teams in the final were —New Zealand: J. Price. H Taylor. P. Flynn. B. Chee. R. Bruce. Scotland: P. McParland. D. Torkington, G Donaldson. W Young, D. Glass.
The highlight of the indoor basketball programme was a match between Canterbury and a team from the United States Forces at Harewood. It was won by Canterbury, 4224 Results were:— Indoor Soccer. —New Zealand beat Continental, 7-3: Scotland beat England. 6-0: Scotland beat New Zealand, 7-1; England drew with Continental. 5-all. Indoor Basketball.—Boys' Gordon Hall beat Wigram, 51-35; Canterbury beat Deepfreeze, 42-24.
