RACING Fast Training Run By Prince Callan And Pepe

To describe the No. 1 grass at Riccarton as a grass at present is quite unrealistic for this track is practically devoid of any growth at all. But it certainly provides lightning footing for trialists. This was reflected by some fast times in training yesterday.

Half-miles in less than SOsec were the rule rather than the exception but the fastest by far was a two-sided gallop by Prince Callan and Pepe, probable rivals in the maiden races at Westport next week-end.

Prince Callan (L. A. Williams) and Pepe (A. Reriti) sped home brilliantly together in 47 4-ssec. It was a particularly smart run although both had only feather-weight riders up. Pepe will be one of W. D. Skelton's mounts at Westport on Saturday but no arrangements have yet been made about a rider for Prince Callan.

Newtarook (W. Beck) gave Bona Fide (A. Reriti) a short start from the half-mile but was upsides with his two-year-old companion at the finish in 4Ssec. Bona Fide recorded 49 3-ssec. It was to have been a three-sided gallop but Newbrook's stablemate. an unraced two-year-old gelding by Rejoicing II from Sea Fox. whipped around before the start and again as they broke away. J. Leach eventually managed to get the youngster under way but he was not timed. Debut At Reefton Bona Fide, winner of the fillies section of the two-year-old parade at Ashburton earlier this month, will ac-

company other members of P. H. Jones’ teem to Westport but she will not race until the Reefton meeting on October 6.

Complaisant fL. A. Williams) was shading Coral Chief (G. W. Mein) at the end of an easy mile in Imin 48eec. They stepped up the pace siigbtly to run the final half in 50 4-ssec. It was not a particularly impressive run by Coral Chief, an acceptor tor the Licensed Victuallers' Handicap at Westport. Harewood (P. H. Jone?) took 28sec for his first two furlongs and rounded off six in Imin 24 4-ssec. He was not permitted to make fast time with a solid weight up. Harewood will compete in the hack sprints at Westport. Gabelle <M. J. Skelton) reeled off her first three furlongs smartly in 39 l-ssec but was easing up at the end of seven in Imin 30 3-ssec. She will be tried for stamina in the Licensed Victuallers' Handicap on Saturday. Not Bustled Derailment (W. Traecey) was not out to make time in his solo run over seven furlongs. He was never above three-quarter pace, taking 43 3-ssec for the first three and Imin 38 2-ssec for the distance. He is one of the

strong form runners in the Licensed Victuallers’ Handicap but unless a suitable light-weight rider is available he may not make the trip to Westport. Kelly Pencarrow (W. Beck) closed a small gap to finish abreast of Welburn (O. Arming) at the end of a smartly run half-mile in 48 3-ssec. Kelly Pencarrow, a six-year-

old Coral Arc gelding in G. R. Pelling's team, will have his first race among the novices at Westport. Mhor <W. Beck) rounded off an easy mile by sprinting home from the half in 52 l-ssec. He is being taken along quietly in preparation for racing ait Rangiora next month.

Pay Out (J. Messent) and Big Boy (L Brougham) made good time to run in from the half-mile together in 48 2-5 sec. Both appeared to have thrived during their winter spell Redstan (W. Beck) took Imin 21 l-ssec to run six furlongs on the plough and came home over the final three in 40sec. He is a lean type but has good pace and may shape well in the Col. vin Hack Handicap, the second leg of the double at Westport on Saturday. Zinder showed that he is fit for engagements at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting next month when he left six furlongs behind on the plough in Imin 19sec and dashed over the last three in 37 4-ssec. He was ridden by M. J. Wildermoth.

McCool, another being prepared for a campaign at Trentham, was let off with three furlongs on the plough. C. McDonald gave him just enough rein to enable him to record 39 4-seec.
