79 On Coup Charges

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BEIRUT, Sept. 19.

A Lebanese Military Court yesterday sentenced 79 people to death on charges of leading last December’s abortive military coup. Only 11 of them are in custody. The other 68 were condemned in their absence. Another 150 accused were gaoled for terms ranging from one to 15 years. Twentythree others were acquitted.

Several accused received the death sentence on more than one count.

An army officer, Captain Fuad Awad, aged 34, received four death sentences, one life imprisonment and other terms of imprisonment amounting to 137 years.
