CAR PARK BUILDING
Lichfield St. Scheme
In accordance with the council’s policy of expediting a parking building on the Lichfield street site, formerly owned by Midland Motorways Ltd., as early as possible, the City Council last evening agreed to instruct the City Engineer (Mr E. Somers) to prepare sketch plans and to authorise test borings. The finance committee reported that when a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce met the off-street parking committee it was freely agreed that if loan funds were available and Loans Board consent obtained for a second loan, the council would probably proceed with the Lichfield street building concurrently with the building on the corner of Manchester and Gloucester streets.
Mr C. D. Ogilvie said it would •be of greet assistance to retailers if the council approved the proposal in principle. the committee said. The council adopted a recommendation: "Subject to commercial interests finding any procurement fees required, and to their negotiating an offer of finance at acceptable interest rates and terms, from a private source, and the Loans Board's approval. the council recommends the incoming council to forthwith take steps towards building a car park on the Lichfield street site.” The chairman (Cr. H. P. Smith) said he had been assured by Mr Ogilvie that he had every prospect of finding the placement fees from retailers and the offer of a loan from a private source.
