First Death From ’Flu

The first death in the Christchurch Health Disrtrict caused by the influenza epidemic occurred in Christchurch last week, the District Medical Officer of Health (Dr. L. F. Jepson) said on Monday. He was releasing last week's list of notifiable diseases.

An infant boy died from fulminant influenza, an acute and overwhelming infection due to an influenzal virus. It is the only death so far notified as being directly due to this infection.

According to the Director of the Outpatients’ Services at Christchurch Hospital (Dr. W. I. Paterson), the incidence of influenza in the city seems to have tapered off. Other diseases notified last week w e r e:—Tuberculosis (four cases in the city, and one in the Riccarton borough); infective hepatitis (one case in the Kaikoura county). There was one case of eye infection in the city.
