Auckland holder of the Ranfurly shield, suffered its first loss of the season today when it was beaten. 16-10 by Northland. at Rugby Park. Whangarei. Northland won the Coronation shield which was at stake The score at half-time was 8-5. Scorers for Northland were A. Bennett and V. Yates (tries) M. Walter (two conversions and a penalty), and L. Townsend /drooped goal). For Auckland. P. Walsh and M. Dick scored tries and M. Cormack converted two.
The game was lively and entertaining; the ground fairly hard and the weather perfect When Northland met Auckland for the Ranfurly shield on August 20, Auckland won 8-3.
