AUSTRALIAN COMMENT
“Injustice” To Be One Down
(NZ. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. September 18.
Hopes for a clear-out decision in next Saturday's third Rugby test between Australia and New Zealand were expressed today by the ■‘Sydney Dally Telegraph" writer. Phil Tresldder. Tresidder. who was in New Zealand for the first two tests, wrote: ‘‘lt is one of those odd injustices in sport that the All Blacks now stand one up in the rubber. The Wallabies, given an ounce of luck, would be two up, with the rubber safely tucked away. "In two relatively undistinguished test matches, they have looked the better side They have had some unlucky refereeing breaks, notably when D. B. Clarke gained his fortuitous penalty goal from in front of the posts in the last second of the Wellington test. ''Alan Farquhar, an alert, athletic Aucklander, is to referee next Saturday’s third test at Eden Park. He is by far the best referee the Wallabies have encountered in New Zealand." Tresidder continued: “The tourists were grateful that he took stern measures to stamp out Illegal line-out play in the second test at Dunedin. Throughout the first test at Wellington, the Wallabies were subjected to some of the worst obstruction tactics in line-outs I have seen in an international match. “New Zealand referees are uniformly more efficient than the run of Australian referees who control touring teams' games in this country. That is only to be expected, because .New Zealand's heavy programme of provincial games gives its referees greater maturity and experience. “At the same time, there is no referee in New Zealand with anything like the authority and stature of Australia’s Dr. Roger Vanderfield."
