South Island Interests In National A.A. Sale

DANNEVIRKE. September IS. South Island breeders and buyers were more active than for many yean at the national Aberdeen Angu* led bull sale in Dannevlrke today. The aale. which marks the centenary of the breed in New Zealand, was the biggest ever with record entries and attendance. Values. however. dropped sharply on last year’s sale with 69 bulls selling for a total of 38,225 guineas—an average of MS guineas—compared with 57 for an average of 7M guineas last year. Top price of 2800 guineas was paid for the supreme champion of the show, a yearling from A. McGaffin Farm. Ltd., Hawke's Bay. which, according to the judge. Mr R M. Adam, of Newhouse of Glamia, Scotland, could take a place in any of Great Britain's top studs. Nevertheless this price was well below the record for the sale of 4200 guineas established In 1955
A feature of the day was the sale of a South Island yearling from J. R. Fraser, of Pleasant Joint, to American Interests for 1400 guineas, the top price for a southern bull. The buyer’s name was not disclosed. Mr Fraser sold two other bulla, one a two-yaar-old for 325 guineas and a yearling for 478 guinea*. breed«M*wae Robert Fraser, ot Timaru. who sold flv* yearlings for a total of 2075
guineas, with his best price being SOO guineas. Roberts and Company, of Middlemarch. were also prominent with the sale ot the two-year-old champion for 1060 guinea*, the top price for that age. They also sold a yearling for 250 guineas. Other South Island sale* included: N. Collis (Hawarden), one yearling at 950gni; D. B. and J. S. Marshall, jnr (Invercargill). one yearling at 275gns; A. J. Darling (Cave, South Canterbury!, one two-year-old at SROgns: Gordon Grieve (Southland) one two-year-old at SSOgns. Purchase* by South Island buyer* included:— Two-year-old*: K. A. Hargreaves (Geraldine) at SOOgns. Yearlings: W Myer* (Christchurch) at MOgna. G. A. and G. D. Rountree (Alford Forest) at 27Sgn*. P. H Hocquard (Marlborough) at SOOgns. F. C. Clay (Kelso) at 400gns. D ChesnaU (Christchurch! at Signs; R. Little (Oamaru) at SOOgns. Miss N. Barley (Christchurch) at SOOgns. A. H. Payne (Christchurch) at 32Sgn*. A. L.
