ADDINGTON MARKET Fat Cattle Values Make Further Rise

With another moderate entry of fat cattle values improved again at Addington market yesterday. This time the heavier steers also shared in the rise. Medium-weight steers were dearer by up to 50s and heavier steers by almost as much. The few heifers in the yarding showed a similar advance, but cows from a steady start tended to ease at the dose. Store cattle continued to sell well, with two-year steers fetching to £34 8s 6d and yearling heifers to £22 8s 6d.

Fat hogget values dropped sharply in an over-supplied market by fully 4s a head. Spring lambs met a sound sale, although the entry was much bigger. Fat ewes showed a sharp drop, but the best of the young mediumweight wethers tended to show a Might improvement, with other wethers unchanged. There was not a particularly lively store sheep sale. Hoggets, if anything, looked to be slightly slacker and ewes and lambs sold at about late rates.

STORE SHEEP In the store sheep section woolly ewes with lambs at foot continued to sell at late rates, but for another moderate-sized entry of hoggets there was not a very lively interest, and values were a little easier than late rates. The entry was of similar site to last week, totalling 1841 head compared with 1754 last week, and including 829 hoggets (BIS last week), 114 older ewes (244), 880 ewes and lambs (809) and 18 wethers (86). Only about 14 or 15 pens of hoggets came to auction, with a few pens being eliminated on account of lice infestation. Among the limited selection there were some quite useful lots of forward condition shorn and early shorn sheep. These again sold relatively better than full woolled sheep. Shorn wether hoggets made from about 30s to 36s 6d, with a small lot of shorn Romneys from J. U. McCracken (Okuku) fetching the upper figure. For the few in the wool values ranged from about 37s to 43s 6d. Woolly Down cross hoggets sold from about 37s to 455. Most of the ewe hoggets were early shorn or woolly, and these sold between 40s and 50s, with the market being topped by R. D. Sloss (Omihi) with 70 early shorn Corriedales realising 51s 6d. Sales included:— New Zealand Farmers’ Cooperative Association, Ltd., sold: on account of R. D. Sloss (Omihi). 105 early shorn Corriedale ewe hoggets at 46s to 51s 6d: D. The best of the woolly ewes and lambs made from 28s 6d to 32s all counted, with others at 22s to 27s 6d. G. A. Hutchison (Woolridges road) with 29 wool y Corriedale ewes and 27 big Southdown cross lambs, headed the section at 325. Among sales were:— Pyne. Gould, Guinness Ltd., sold: on account of J. U. SPRING LAMBS A big entry of 162 spring ■ambs. compared with 90 last week, was the second largest offering this season, but a good demand ruled throughout the tale and values continued to hold a satisfactory level with a slight improvement on the better quality pens. Best spring lambs made 54s d to 65s Id. with medium at 48s Id to 53s Id and small at 40s Id to 45s Id.

FAT HOGGETS Fat hoggets showed a sharp drop in values with an oversupplied market and restricted competition. The entry totalled 2821 head, compared with 2339 last week. The market opened on a depressed note with most classes cheaper by fully 4s a head and this trend continued, although the sale tended to be very erratic at times. Plain hoggets predominated and there were very few top quality big sheep on offer. Heavy hoggets tended to hold their values and there was a moderately good demand for the best of the medium weights, but plain and lighter weights were hard to sell at any time. Towards the end there was a brief recovery on good quality medium-weights, but other classes closed on a slack note. Passings were frequent. Throughout the sale shorn hoggets met a relatively better demand—such as it was—than comparable woolly sorts, and the drop in values was not as great. Some lines of woolly hoggets could be quoted cheaper by 6s a head. The sale was topped by Campbell and Hart (Rakaia) with five at 69s Id to 72s Id. F. B. Magson (Rakaia) sold 9 at 68s Id and D. R. Crawford (Ashburton) had a sale at 65s Id. Top sale of shorn hoggets at 595»7d was made by F. Jamieson (Aylesbury) and- R. K. Reed (Darfield) sold a pen at 56s Id. Quality was about the same but there were many more shorn ewes forward. Very few woolly wethers were offered. The very best of the prime medium - weight two - tooth wethers showed a slight but erratic improvement, and there was increased demand for this class from wholesale interests. Older, heavy and plain wethers, however, showed little change on the slack sales of recent weeks and were not in demand. The ewe market opened on a weak note with values 3s a head down on last week’s buoyant sale. As the sale progressed the easing became more pronounced and the market was erratic. Towards the end woolly ewes were 6s to 8s a head cheaper, -and in some cases more, and shorn ewes were easier by fully 4s to 5s a head. > Wether sales were headed by Wilson Bros. (Halkett) with a pen at 59s Id and other good sales of shorn wethers were made at 58s id by W. Band (Halkett) and B. WynnWilliams (Waipara). Top sale of woolly ewes at 49s Id was made by D. H. After last week's shortish entry of 298 the offering yesterday was only a little larger at 334 head, and was still barely sufficient for the requirements of the trade, and there was a further general improvement in values. Quality was generally described as being good, with some excellent medium-weight cattle included.

Steers gained up to 50s a head for medium-weight cattle, and heavier sorts showed almost as marked an appreciation, and, in fact, some of the heavier cattle were considered to have shown a bigger gain than best butchers' cattle.

There were hardly any heifers yarded, but the few in the offering sold at a similar advance to steers—about 30s to 40s dearer. . Cows made steady rates in the early part of the sale, but towards the close they showed an easing trend.

DAIRY CATTLE The 50s gain in price which was recorded in the dairy cattle section last week was all lost yesterday, and possibly values dropped a little more as well. Right throughout the sale there was little interest. The entry totalled about 33 head and with few exceptions it was of mediocre quality. A very small attendance followed the sale. Best second, third and fourth calvers realised from £3O to £35. with one nice Friesian at £42, medium cows £24 to £29 and others down to £lB. In the heifer section Shorthorns realised from £2l to £27, the best of the Jerseys £2l to £24 with Jerseys which were a little backward at £l2 to £l9, and a few Frieslans at about £25 and £26. VEALERS Best veal was dearer and rougher sorts cheaper. The entry totalled about 148 head and was slightly in excess of last week's offering. A few pens of good runners and suckers realised up to 20s a head more than last week, but quite a few big plainer sorts of runners were Included in the entry and these were cheaper by 15s to 20s. Small calves, of which there were not many in the selection, and small to medium suckers, however, commanded a better market and were dearer by 10s to 15s a head.

FAT PIGS The porker entry was again small and quality left a lot to be desired. Many of the pigs were excessively fat. Best quality porkers maintained late rates but plain and overfat types were again hard to sell. The chopper entry was much smaller and competition was keen throughout. Baconers were forward in smaller numbers and competition improved with values dearer by 5s to 7s a head. Values were:— Light and unfinished porkers, £6 4s 6d to £7 4s 6d. Medium porkers, £7 14s 6d to £8 14s 6d. Heavy porkers, £8 17s 6d to £9 5s 6d. Choppers, £ll Is to £l7 8s 6d. Light and medium baconers, £9 19s 6d to £ll 4s 6d. Heavy baconers, £ll 12s 6d to £l2 9s 6d. STORE PIGS The store pig entry was one of the largest for the season and consisted mainly of weaners and slips. The attendance of buyers was much smaller and although values were easier by 5s to 6s a head there was a sound demand throughout. Sows with litters of seven to 11 piglets made £33 to £43. Values were:— Small weaners. 48s to 68s. Best weaners. 70s to 85s. Slips, 90s to £5. Small and medium stores, £5 2s to £5 10s. Large stores. £5 15s to £6 3s.
