Because of public feeling towards the Lyttelton watersiders who refuse to work the African Reefer. the secretary of the Canterbury Football Association (Mr E. H. Williams) sug. gested to a meeting of the association’s management committee last evening, that the Wateraiders’ second division team be given byes for the remainder of the season.
If Watersiders were to play their scheduled match against Lyttelton on Saturday, and there were incidents on the field, the code would be brought to ill-repute, said Mr Williams.
“They are not playing the African Reefer, they are playing Lyttelton,” said the convener of the match committee (Mr T. C. Gottermeyer). Mr Williams's motion, that Watersiders be given byes for the remainder of the season, lapsed because of the lack of a seconder.
Mr R. Storer’s motion, that the matter be closed, was carried.
