TOO LITTLE WIND FOR KITES

Competition Postponed ■ A sunny afternoon brought out more than 20 young kiteflyers yesterday for the Young Men’s Christian Association’s kite-flying competition at Hagley Park. Conditions for kite-flying, though better than in the morning, when the box-kite competition had to be cancelled because of rain, were not ideal. The breeze was too light and not steady enough, and the competition had to be postponed. A great variety of kites, many home-made, was flown, ranging from newspaper kites with tails of rags to brightly painted and inscribed kites with multicoloured crepe paper tails. The kites all had to have exactly 200 ft of string, and each contestant's string was measured before the kite could be flown. The whole length of string had to be unravelled before the kites were tested for height. With the lack of breeze, however, the kites could not even reach the required height. If conditions are favourable the contest will be held on Friday. WHEN you want to BUY. look where people advertise what they have to sell.
