Magistrate’s Court Seven Days’ Gaol; Licence Cancelled For Three Years

Raymond Morris Efford. aged 32, a deer culler, was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment by Mr A. P. Blair, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of driving in Lichfield street while under the influence of drink or drugs on August 28. Efford’s driving licence was cancelled for three years. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was not represented by counsel.

Senior-Sergeant G. M. Cleary said two constables saw Efford drive through red lights on Colombo street at the intersections of Hereford and Cashel streets at 1.35 a.m. Efford was stopped in Lichfield' street and when he got out of his vehicle he almost fell over. His eyes were bloodshot and his breath smelt strongly of liquor.

The accused told the police j he had been drinking all day. < He was examined ' at the < police station by Dr. J. S. 1 Wilson and certified as unfit j to drive. Suppression of name was 1 refused. It was Edward Trevor McCann, aged 30, a motor-cycle mechanic, who was fined on this charge. Gordon Noel McCann, aged 28, a workman, was remanded on bail to September 3 on ■ charges of assault and resist- ■ iijg arrest. The error is regretted.
