The Canada Goose
Sir, —The much - aligned Canada goose has had an airing in Parliament. A little more publicity and even the lake settlers will be persuaded that there really must be a goose problem. That one loss of browntop (or was it water twitch?) has caused quite a flutter. The farmer concerned gave his loss as £5OO other farmers put it at £2OO to £300; but Mr Lake, according to “The Press” report, says it was about £ 1500. The humour of the situation is not lost on those who know the facts. The geese feed on land which is frequently flooded and where the vegetation is of poor quality. Where damage to crops occurs on land not subject to flooding, permits to shoot are easily obtainable. Sensible farmers act quickly with the help of other willing shooters and the geese soon stay away. Similar action by the browntop farmer would have been equally effective. —Yours, etc., HONKER.
