Women’s Hockey Canterbury Still Second In Section

DUNEDIN, August 28. As a result of its draw with Waikato. Otago’s lead in section B of the national women's hockey tournament has been reduced. Canterbury still shares second place with Maniototo and these two teams will meet on Thursday. In section A, Wellington, Eastern Southland and Auckland A, al] with one loss each, share the lead. On a waterlogged ground Canterbury beat Central Otago, 4-2. The Canterbury attack benefitted because there was improved combination and passing among the forwards, although they still did not retreat far enough to link with the defence. nor did they work hard enough to become unmarked. It was fortunate for Canterbury that Central Otago did not concentrate more of its attacks down the right flank When it did it was able to gain large stretches of territory. covered well and her stickwork and passing were of a very high standard. S. Comer was Cantedbury’s best player and effectively cancelled out any midfield breaks by Central Otago. Her elusive stickwork and accurate passing were features of her game A. Fleete played another sound game, back-tackling tirelessly and giving her forwards most effective support on attack. B. Simmonds replaced A Colville at left-half. The forwards showed Improved form on attack because there was more reliance on passing and combination. F. Kelly played her best game of the tournament and her skilful stickwork and constructive passing were the basis of Canterbury’s attacks. She combined well with D Eddy, who made some fine breaks and whose centre hits were most effective A. Giles showed improvement tn the centre and scorer" two good goals, and J.
