POWER ON WEST COAST
Work On Extension Of National Grid Preliminary work has begun on the extension of the national electric power supply system for another 50 miles south along the West Coast from Arahura into the Harihari and Whataroa areas. Two small water-power generating plants, one at Amethyst ravine, near the Little Wanganui river, and the other at Lake Wahapo, at present supply this region. A further small generator on the Tatare stream supplies the Franz Josef and Waiho regions. The proposed new transmission line, carrying 66.000 volts, will replace these isolated systems, which are controlled by tw-o independent power supply authorities —the Amethyst Power Company and the Westland County Council. It is expected that these bodies will combine to administer supply' from the national grid Announced by the Minister of Electricity <Mr Goosman* last June, work so far has resulted in the selection of a route for the line south to a point near Lake lanthe. The route will be surveyed soon.
