U.S. Aims This Season

WASHINGTON. Aug. 25 The exploration of Palmer Peninsula so that a scientific station can be established there, and the establishment of a permanent winter and summer scientific station at the Sky Hi site in the centre of Ellsworth Land are among the primary projects of the 1962-63 United States Antarctic operation.
The eighth operation began officially at the week-end when Rear-Admiral D. M. Tyree, the naval support force commander, left Washington for Christchurch.
This season's operation will involve about 3600 men ashore and afloat, including civilians of the National Science Foundation, whose work is supported by the Navy during the summer, says the Associated Press The installation of the nuclear power station at the American base on Ross Island in McMurdo Sound and its successful operation this winter means that the problem of fresh water has been solved All fresh water used a-t the base has come from melted snow. The Navy now i expects that a seawater distillation plant using the redactor's heat, will provide 114.000 gallons of fresh water I*
