WAR CONTRARY TO CHRIST

View Of Methodist leaders

War is contrary to the spirit and teaching of Jesus Christ, in the opinion of 90 per cent, of the Methodist leaders who answered a recent questionnaire by that Church According to a report by the international affairs committee of the Methodist Church of New Zealand, almost half tlie leaders questioned said there could be occasions on which war was to be chosen as the lesser of evils.

The report was adopted by the Synod of the North Canterbury district of the Church.

To promote justice and order, most of the leaders supported the establishment of a strong United Nations force. Most of them did not support disarmament by one nation only. Eighty per cent, of the leaders supported the spending by the Government of more money on the Colombo Plan and other overseas aid.

Methodists holding office supported a ministry to members of the armed forces. They were more in favour of chaplains being in uniform and receiving the pay of the services, said the report. Obedience to the State was never absolute or unconditional, the report said. The power of the State was needed for the preservation of order and justice, and its use must always be governed by the upholding of this end.
