Matamata Horses Win £67,500

“The Press" Special Service MATAMATA. August 22. Matamata-tralned horses firmly clinched the centre's position as the major training area outside the cities in the racing season just ended. No less than 22 of them won more than £lOOO. and although there was no outstanding major stake winner to boost earnings, they took 96 races and earned £67.500.

As there were never more than a hundred horses in work it was a remarkable average, believed to be unexcelled. Most of the year there were well below that number active. They won races from Whangarei in the north to Christchurch in the south, and at most places in between, giving especially strong support to clubs in Taranaki. East Coast, Hawke’s Bay, Trentham. and Riccarton. The steeplechaser Triple Score with £3150 and Old Parr, £2645 on a restricted preparation. were the feature winners. L. W. Ford was again leading trainer with 18 wins.
