Obituary MR A. N. RUTLEDGE

WELLINGTON, Aug. 23. A noted New Zealand journalist, Mr A. N. Rutledge, died at Kaikoura yesterday. Mr Rutledge received practically all his training in journalism on the staff of the “Star-Sun” (now the “Christchurch Star”). He was caplain of the St. Andrew’s College Ist XV and Ist XI. and later was a Canterbury provincial boxer and athlete. His reports of the 1931 Napier earthquake are still highly regarded in journalism.

Mr Rutledge joined th e National Military Reserve in the Second World War and later served in the Pacific with the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He was with the occupation forces in Japan doing newspaper and public relations work.

On his return from Japan he joined the “Dominion's” sub-editorial staff, becoming chief reporter within a few months. Later he accepted a position with the Government publicity service and w as press officer to several Ministers of the Crown, serving his longest term with the Minister of Works (Mr Goosman). His funeral will take place tomorrow at Christchurch.
