LINEN FLAX SEASON
Bad Weather For Harvest
(Parliamentary Reporter)
WELLINGTON. Aug. 23. The Linen Flax Corporation had a surplus of £47 according to the annual report tabled in Parliament today. Production of fibre was down compared with that of 1960, but sales of the flax product were maintained, said the report. The year was the most difficult the corporation had experienced. During the harvest 5.25 inches of rain was recorded in Geraldine. Much wet weather during the winter retarded the drying of the retted straw. This meant the quality of the fibre was poorer.
Sales for tihe year with those for the previous year in brackets were: Fibre. £52.854 (£52.126); seed, £6497 (£8554); tow. £3260 (£6221); other products. £1153 (£1740).
All tow was sold in New Zealand. Surplus seed was disposed of overseas, 60 tons being shipped to Belgium. The net profit, before charging interest on loan capital, was £2247. The amount accruing to the Treasury for interest on capital was £2200.
