LONG-STAY PATIENTS
Special Beds Possible
Special accommodation may be provided for tongstay hospital patienits who need only “sensible nursing and a certain degree of comfort.” Mr J. B. Hay told the North Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday. In a discussion in Wellington between board members and the Director-General of Health (Dr. H. B. Turbott). Dr. Turbott had hinted that the current survey of bed needs might indicate that some beds for long-stay patients could be provided at less expense than now, said Mr Hay. This was because these patients often did not need the full services which had to be provided for the general run of cases dealt with in the hospitals.
Dr. Turbott had said the current survey would probably yield some results bv the end of October, although he “didn't absolutely guarantee this,” Mr Hay said. It seemed that no progress whatsoever on the board’s plans for completing the Princess Margaret Hospital was to be expected until these results were available.
Dr. Turbotit would visit Christchurch today to discuss the progress of the survey, he added.
