Twenty-two applications for 12 junior house-surgeon positions next year with the North Canterbury Hospital Board were received by the board yesterday, and seven applicaionis for six senior house-surgeons’ jobs. The applications were considered in committee, and names were selected to be sent to the Health Department for approval. “It is gratifying to see such a demand to join us. especially in view of the general shortage of housesurgeons.’’ said the chairman 'Professor A. J. Danks).
Discouraging Smoking.— Suggestions of the medical advisory committee about steps that could be taken to discourage smoking in hospital were under consideration by the institutions committee. the committee reported. Examination Passes.— AH 67 nurse trainees who sat the first professional examination in May were successful, eight gaining honours. Of 76 trainees who sat the final examinations in June.,all but two passed and 20 gained honours.
