DOUBLE-UNIT TRAILERS

Fitting Of Brakes Favoured Brakes should be fitted to the rear trailer when a car was tewing two units, for instance,, a caravan and a beat trailer, the Christchurch Metropolitan Road Safety Committee decided last evening.

The committee had been asked for its opinion in a letter from the Commissioner of Transport (Mr A. E. Forsythe). The district officer of the Transport Department (Mr D. L. Hogan) said the practice was growing of persons towing a caravan with a trailer behind it.

The City Council’s Traffic Superintendent (Mr J. F. Thornes) said he felt that much of the trouble was caused by the drivers of such multiple units being inexperienced. There should perhaps be a test for the drivers. In his opinion private cars should not be allowed to tow more than one unit.

A suggestion that blue lights on towing vehicles should be abolished was also supported, with two members dissenting. Other members agreed that the blue light should be replaced by white width marker lights on trailers more than 6ft wide, with blue lights being retained on boat trailers on which the fitting of marker lights was not practicable.
