IRRIGATION FARM EXPERIMENT

League’s Venture Now Under Way

The “first sod” had been turned on the Canterbury Progress League’s experimental irrigation farmlet of about eight acres on the south bank of the Waimakariri, near West Melton, members of the league’s council were informed at their meeting last evening. With the land now ploughed, Kempthorne, Prosser, and Company, Ltd. had agreed to give a ton and a half of superphosphate, and the Produce Merchants’ Association seed for an initial green crop, either rape or turnips, reported the secretary (Mr H. R. Pool).

Ploughing of the land—previously under tussock—had shown the soil to be quite good, although a little sandy—“but we don’t want the soil to be too good, as results from poorer ground will represent a better achievement,” Mr Pool said.
