TRIBUTES TO CHURCHILL
Press Hails Home-Going (NJ. Press Assn. —Copyright) LONDON, August 22.
The British press today paid tribute to the ‘‘Old Warrior,” Sir Winston Churchill, on his return home yesterday after nearly two months in a London hospital recovering from a broken thighbone. Three newspapers, “The Times,” the “Daily Telegraph” and the “Daily Mail” devoted editorials to the 87-year-old former British Prime Minister.
Most newspapers carried front page stories of his recovery with large pictures of his arrival home splashed across the page. “The Times” said: “He has done it again. The old warrior has won another of his battles, and everywhere there are affectionate chuckles . . . as the picture of him appears, being brought home in style with the cigar, the stick, and a glint of the old mischievous smile.
“Once again determination, willpower, courage and an unquenched zest for living have turned the corner.”
The “Daily Telegraph” said: “Sir Winston Churchill has again survived an experience which is too often fatal to ordinary mortals.” The “Daily Mail” said: “If it had happened to anyone else it would have been miraculous, but because it is Sir Winston Churchill it is—well. Churchillian.”
