OTEMATATA BACK
Smart Run At Trials
"The Press" Special Servlet AUCKLAND, August 21.
Otematata made an impressive reappearance after being let up for a time when he led Pipe Dream, Jovic and five other notable gallopers to the end of five furlongs during a series of barrier trials held by the Auckland Racing Club at Takanini today
Otematata, which comes from Te Rapa, has not raced since ne won the Great Northern Challenge Stakes weight-for-age. at Ellerslie in the autumn. With his rider. G R. Edge, holding him up nicely, Otematata trailed the pacemaker Pipe Dream until they had 100 yards to run and he then went ahead by a couple of lengths. Pipe Dream, which had been a bit reluctant to take his place in the starting gates and unsettled as a consequence, finished second, shading Jovic (third). On Saturday at the Pakuranga Hunt races Jovic is in the Jellicoe Handicap, for which today's run looked a good trial. Otematata, which was running in the second trial for open horses over five furlongs, went Imin 4 3-ssec, a fraction quicker than Gold Chick ran when he won the first heat The horses which ran against Otematata included Firenze (fourth), Mali and Gauntlet Against Gold Chick they included Stipulate (second). Both Gold Chick and Stipulate went encouragingly and Firenze, by making up a good deal of leeway near the finish, also shaped pleasingly Gold Chat and Kebir were two of the impressive younger runners. Each was first home in a heat for two-year-olds.
Gold Chat led nine others in the third heat and Kebir won the first heat from the same number of colls and geldings The next best behind Gold Chat were Chickmaster and Fedele and Aeapulco and Repeal followed Kebir to the finish Gold Chat and Kebir are in I. J. and I. R Tucker’s team, so they were on their home ground Gold Chat is the chestnut gelding by Chatsworth from Alluvial and Kebir is a colt of the same colour by Sabaean from Glad Tidings Gold Chat is owned by Mr L R Spring, for whom I J Tucker trained Rising Fast He is a half-brother of Luvial. one of the good young horses prepared by the late F Smith and his son, G W. Smith, a few seasons back Kebir carries the colours of Mr and Mrs R Mcßean He is a brother of Burgos. Both Gold Chat and Kebir are youngsters of good physique and their progress from now on is going to be interesting The other two-year-old winners were Pirene and Chamour They were first home in the heats reserved for fillies Pirene is a black by Sabaean from Sitting Pretty and Chamour is a cnestnut by Red Marlin from All Alone Pirene is another of the team being prepared by the Tuckers and Chamour is from R. J Wallace's stable The course for the two-year-olds was two and a half furlongs up the straight from the starting gates Gold Chat which made the quickest time, went 32 seconds and Kebir's time was 32 l-ssec They were pretty smart gallops. taking into account the uphill run to the finish The weather was threatening for a start but then improved and became quite mild. The going was dead
