NASSELLA CONTROL

£161,000 For Land (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. August 21. A total of 21,501 acres of land in North Canterbury has been purchased by the Government for nassella tussock control at a price of £161,202. Details of the purchases were given in Parliament this afternoon by the Minister of Lands (Mr Gerard) in reply to a question by Mr N. E. Kirk (Opposition. Lyttelton) Mr Kirk asked for the total area bought, the price paid, the Government unimproved value, and the Government capital value.

Mr Gerard said that five complete properties had been bought, one of them as a going concern, and that parts of two other properties had been purchased. Of the complete properties, four were purchased for £54.465 against Government valuations of £53,360 capital value, including £26,335 unimproved value.

The total purchase price of the property bought as a going concern was £60,000. Mr Gerard said. This included stock and plant assessed at £20,570. Government valuation was £38,600 capital value and £24,265 unimproved value. “The portions of two other properties bought on a per acre basis for a total of £46.737 have not yet been separately assessed for Government valuation purposes.” Mr Gerard said. “I am satisfied that the prices paid were fair both to the vendor and to the Government,” he added.
