lodine Content Up A Third
(NZ P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) WASHINGTON, Aug. 19. The level of radioactive iodine in American milk increased bv one-third in July because of the recent nuclear tests in Nevada, the Public Health Service said yesterday. In most parts of the United | States the level remained low but there were sharp incresses in certain areas in the west Some of the affected fresh milk supplies had been used to make cheese and butter, the service said. This was because iodine in milk lost almost all its radioactivity by the time it reached the customer as a manufactured product. Some herds had been moved from pastures to eat stored food tn an attempt to cut down the radioactivity of 61 milk sampling stations in ‘he United S‘ates. The nation-wide average for stroivium 90 in milk also increased There is no precise daneer level for radioactive iodine according to the Federal Ratlistion Council The level is based on long-term consumption of the iodine rather than the quan'itv in any particular item of food.
