COMPETITIONS AT TIMARU

1400 Entries For Annual Festival

(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, August 20.

A New Zealand under-16 Seann Triubhais championship, and a South Canterbury under-10 Sword Dance championship were decided at the tenth annual festival conducted at the Scottish and New Century Halls by the Timaru Competitions Society today.

Winner of the national event, in which there were seven entries, was Mary Lemon (Dunedin) who was awarded 86 points. Heather Dawson (Christchurch) was second <B4>, and Lorraine Dewar (80) was third.

There were 23 competitors in the district Sword Dance championship. Heather Carter, of Invercargill, with 70 points, won from Joan McCusker (68) and Jocelyn Hay, Christchurch (68>.

The competitions, in which there are about 1400 entries, were opened by the Mayor of Timaru (Mrs Muriel Hilton). The festival will last until Friday, and will incorporate demonstration concerts. The judges are as follows: Fancy dancing. Miss Gladys Bushell (Christchurch); national dancing, Mrs Doreen Casey t Dunedin); speech, Mrs Molly O’Sullivan (Christchurch); vocal and instrumeneal. Mr Clifton Cook (Christchurch).

The Mayor said competitions were playing a worthwhile part in encouraging children and their parents to develop an interest in the arts. New Zealand was •‘growing up” in this respect, and there was a future for young persons with special talents in national organisations such as the ballet and opera companies, said the Mayor.
