BRIGADE’S MOVE
New Routes For Calls
Additional warning sirens will be placed in parts of the city.as a result of the move of the new central fire station to Kilmore street, and new access routes have been planned. Because of the broad frontage to the new station, engines would be able to make a quick getaway to fires when alarms were received, the Chief Fire Officer iMr L. R. Osmond) said yesterday. New sirens will be installed at the corner of Manchester and Armagh streets, the corner of Worcester and Manchester streets, and possibly at the corner of Manchester and Cashel streets. Existing sirens on the High streetLichfleld street - Manchester street intersection and at the corner of Armagh and Colombo streets will be retained; but the siren at the Bank of New Zealand corner at the entrance to Cathedral square will be removed. As far as possible, engines would move into the main part of the city along Manchester street, with lateral runs as required, Mr Osmond said. There would be times when a call was received from Sydenham or the Moorhouse avenue areas, when Barbadoes street would be used.
For calls to New Brighton, engines would follow the river route.
Where there were calls to the northern part of the city, the engines would travel over the Madras and Barbadoes street bridges. The brigade's radio system enabled it to be more flexible in bringing resources to bear where they were most urgently required.
