AUSTRALIAN COINS
Firms, Banks Embarrassed (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 16 The large number of Australian coins in circulation is a source of embarrassment to banks and business houses. Gas-meter readers frequently find Australian shillings in slot meters and Auckland Transport Board drivers are often handed them in payment for fares. “They are a source of embarrassment when a customer finds we cannot give him full value for his coins because some are Australian ones.” said a bank officer today “Frequently the customer does not realise Australian coins are among those he is tendering." “Last year approximately £llO in Australian coins passed through the Transport Board's hands." said the treasurer (Mr L J Fry) Mr B L. Killip, chief cashier of the Auckland Gas Company, said about £8 to £lO worth of Australian coins come in each month Bank officials said the coins are stored and when a large number have accumulated they are shipped to Australia to be put back into circulation.
Whakatane Flights
A DC3 airliner service for Whakatane is expected to begin on November 1 The week-day schedule will connect Auckland. Tauranga Whakatane. and Gisborne The assistant general manager of the National Airways Corporation. Mr G K GrowScott said today that in view of the excellent progress [being made with the sealing of the Whakatane airfield. it appeared possible for the airport to be used f° r DC3 operations during October If the airfield is ready before November 1. the service will begin at the earliest possible date. —(PA )
