Legend Keeps Oak In Place
<N ,Z.P .A.-Reuter— Copyright) LONDON. August 16 Merlin the magician is taking a hand in British Government planning. The Ministry of Transport wants to remove a withered stump of an oak which the people of Carmarthen, Wales, have been safeguarding for years, “The Times” said. The citizens have not taken the proposal lightly because attached to the stump is a legendary prophecy, ’ attributed to Merlin: "When priory’s oak shall tumble down "Then will fall Carmarthen town.” The Ministry wants to remove the oak "in view of the danger to road users by the presence of this obstruction." It stands near a road junction. The town has done all possible in the past to prevent the fall of Carmarthen by supporting the stump with concrete and putting railings around it.
But now most people seem in favour of defying Merlin and moving the trunk—providing a suitable alternative site can be found.
