FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE

Check On Imports (N.Z. Press Association)' AUCKLAND. August 14 Serious outbreaks of a virulent African-type foot-and-mouth disease in seven Near Eastern countries is causing no concern in New Zealand. Department of Agriculture officials say. but a close check is being made by fumigating officers on all imports from the countries affected. Countries with confirmed outbreaks are Iraq, the Syrian Arab Republic, Israel. Lebanon. Turkey. Jordan and Iran. The strain has been found to be “highly invasive" and has caused severe losses in cattle, sheep and goats. Departmental officers are thoroughly checking packing materials and products entering New Zealand from the countries. No livestock is imported from them.
