Escaped Prisoner Still At Large

A prisoner who escaped from Paparua Prison yesterday morning had not been recaptnred late last evening after an Intensive search over a wide area by police and wardens. The man is Kenny Karema Kaipo, a cook and workman, who Is serving a sentence of three years’ gaol.

Ka:po is a quarter-caste Maori, aged 27. sft 9m in height, and has a copper complexion, black hair and brown eyes. On his right forearm are tattboed a heart and the words “Ken.” “Ann” and “Yvonne." and on the left forearm a heart, cross and the words "Mum” and “Mary." When he escaped he was wearing blue denims, a grey jacket and possibly a grey shirt and a blue cap

A road block was estab lished on the Main North road at the Waimakarin river bridge by two constables. Another road block was set up on the Main South road at the Rakaia river by officers of the Prisons Department. Kaipo, a trusted prisoner was working in the prison quarry as a digger driver. He was last seen by warders about half way through the morning. He was found to be missing when a check was made at about 11.45 a.m. All prisoners were then returned behind the walls of the main building. The police were informed about midday and patrol cars went to the prison. The police dogs. Ace, Buck and Gem. in charge of their handlers. Constables A E. Arnold. L. J- Petersen and G A Gallagher. were members of the party of police and warders which conducted a search near the prison. served as a liaison officer between the police and Prisons Department. After details of the escape had been broadcast a woman telephoned the Central Police Station to say that she bad seen a man who resembled the description -of the prisoner, walking north on the Main road near St Bede’s College. When she was shown a photograph of the

missing man she Identified him as the person she had seen. The police also received anonymous telephone calls to say that the prisoner was believed to have been seen cycling on the Main North road, near Belfast. A police party was sent at once to the area and conducted a widespread search In the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court on February 9. Kaipo was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment by Mr A. P Blair, S.M.. on three charges of burglary at Ashburton on January 17. On a charge of possessing an instrument of burglary

Kaipo was sentenced to a concurrent period of six months' gaol and to one year's gaol on a joint charge of burglary. Kaipo has a number of convictions for theft, warehouse breaking, shopbreaking. conversion and burglary Kaipo is not considered dangerous, according to a senior prison official. |
