N.Z. Band’s Success
Lovers of band music—and they are legion—will join in congratulating the New Zealand National Band on its splendid performance at the world championship contest in Holland. Christchurch audiences were privileged to hear this band immediately before its departure overseas in June. The sending of the band to the world contest itself represented a triumph of voluntary effort, culminating in a series of fundraising concerts throughout the Dominion. The National Band consists of 38 players, drawn from 15 local bands.
Its recent successes show that, under the direction of Mr K. G. L. Smith, the band has attained a notable standard of musicianship and that the players have remedied faults which tended to mar their earlier performances together. This is by no means the first occasion on which New Zealand bandsmen have acquitted themselves well against international competition; nevertheless, it is an opportune testimony to the enthusiasm of the Dominion’s brass band supporters, and to the quality of their work.
