NEW POLICE STATION
Latimer Sq. Site Sought /Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. 14. The Ministry of Works was negotiating on behalf of the Police Department for a new Central Police Station site in Christchurch, the Commissioner of Police. (Mr C. L. Spencer) said today. The department needs at least half an acre on which to build a station and barracks and to have room tor its vehicles. Mr Spencer said that although no building had yet been planned it would be similar to the station planned tor Auckland. This was in two blocks of seven floors each and tenders for the Auckland building would be called in the next few months.
The site which the department hopes to have is partly on Government-owned land in Worcester street near Latimer square. Much of the block surrounding it is already occupied by Government offices and other departments will probably be allotted building space there. But the Ministry of Works is now negotiating for an adjacent site' to make more land available to the Police Department. The ultimate government scheme is for a State office block where the police station now stands.
