RECEIVING CHARGE

Stolen Electric Heaters

Ronald Cyril Sloane, aged, 39, a workman, was charged in the Supreme Court yesterday with four counts of receiving a total of 10 electric heaters, the property of H. E. Shacklock, Ltd., to a total value of £l3O, between July and December last year, knowing them to have been stolen.

Sloane is represented by Mr A. C. Perry, with him Mr W. A. Anderson.

Mr C. M. Roper, for the Crown, said that Sloane was interviewed by the police in January when he was advertising heaters for sale. He told the police he had asked his father-in-law in Dunedin to get him a heater, but had been told they were hard to get. Later he had received a heater from Colin Macleod Harman in Dunedin for £lO. and subsequently nine others at the same price, when the wholesale price was £l5 each and the retail price £l9 19s Harman, then an employee of Shacklock’s, admitted stealing the heaters, and had served a term of imprisonment for theft. Harman was now in Australia, but his, evidence in the Magistrate's Court, admitting the sale of heaters to Sloane, would be read by consent Sloane told one man to whom he sold a heater that he had received it as a present and was selling it because he already had one, said Mr Roper. He told another man that a heater he was selling him had come from his, Sloane’s, father-in-law.

Mr Justice Richmond adjourned the trial to today.
