KOHN SHIELD MATCHES

Tramway Council’s Tournament Wellington and Christchurch comfortably won the first matches yesterday of the New Zealand Tramways Rugby Council’s annual Kohn Shield contest. Wellington beat Dunedin, 11-0. and Christchurch beat Auckland. 16-3. The final matches will be played tomorrow, at Rugby Park. Wellington had two important advantages over Dunedin—a fitter team and better forwards. It was an even game until the last 15 minutes, when Wellington assumed command. Christchurch outplayed Auckland in the forwards, and. except for a short period near the end of the first spell,, was always on top. Auckland gave a solid display, but lacked the speed and agility of the Christchurch players, for whom B. Nunan in the forwards, D. Sampson at half-back, and J. Bovd at full-back were outstanding. Boyd distinguished himself with a spectacular field goal. Referee For Test (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 14. Mr C. J- McAuley (Otago) will referee, the first Rugby test between Australia and New Zealand at Athletic Park on August 25. Mr McAuley controlled the North v. South game at Christchurch last month and the New Zealand trial at Wellington in May.
